Knives very much like this one can be seen in Scottish portraiture dating to the 1500's, and in this country they were carried by frontiersmen up through the end of the fur trade around 1840. They are still carried as camp knives today because of their versatility.
A frontier blacksmith could bang out a knife from an old worn out rasp, stick an antler on it for a handle and call it a knife. The one pictured is just a little bit more finished than that.
Blade: 10 3/4" 5160 steel.
