Stag Handled Dirk
It was the late 1400's that first saw a knife like this show up in Scottish portraiture. There is a painting of a Clan Chief sitting on a rock watching while his ghillie dresses out a stag that the chief has just killed. (Of course the chief wouldn't get his hands in it...that's best left to those hardy rustics that live so close to the land, don't you know.) In this country this knife was popular as a rifle knife up through the end of the fur trade, around 1840.
